We expanded our base of devices

27. 11. 2017

This week, the "family" of our testing facilities has expanded to include a flame spread detector on the surface of horizontally positioned materials, which uses ISO 5658-2.

How will the EN 45545 test be used?

Thanks to this device, we are able to solve some of the testes according to EN 45545-2 completely in our country and not under subcontracts from other accredited laboratories. This reduce the time ti complete the test as well ai its total cost. Standard EN 45545-2 addresses the fire protection of railway vehicles to meet the fire performance of materials and components.

How does the device work?

For a sample size of 800 x 150 x max 70 mm, heat is radiated at an angle of 15º from the ceramic panel. This heat leads to the decomposition of the material that releases the gaseous particles. These are then ingnites by a gas burner. We observe the moment of ignition of the test material, the time of the flame passing through the indicated sections, the time at which the flame front reached the end of the sample, the time the flame has stopped. The test ends when the flame front reaches the end of the sample, the flame stops and extinguishes or fails to ignite the sample within 10 minutes.

At the end of the test, the average heat for steady burning and the critical thermal flux of the extinguishing of the material - ie the heat flux incident to the sample at the point where the flame arrest was stopped and the burning of the material interrupted - is evaluated. So the name CFE means Critical Flux at Extinguishment.
